The Ground State
of Observation

Ten steps from first principles. Three definitions. No new axioms. One cascade that governs everything observable — AI, gambling, crypto, gaming, and electrons in crystals.

Three Definitions. Nothing Else.

The entire framework — the drift cascade, the Pe number, the Fantasia Bound, the superconductor design principle — follows from three operational definitions. No new axioms. No special assumptions about cognition or consciousness.

This paper describes a framework that governs every interaction between an observer and an opaque, responsive system. You are an observer. This paper is a responsive system. The framework applies to this reading.
Definition 1

Opacity

The mechanism channel capacity approaches zero. You receive outputs but cannot reconstruct the process that generated them. A property of the interface — not of your ignorance.

Responsiveness

Mutual information between input and output is positive. The system's outputs depend on your inputs. A thermostat qualifies. A social feed qualifies. Not a claim about agency.

Engaged Attention

Sustained interaction coupling α > 0 over time. Functional — not phenomenal. An electron continuously scattered by a crystal lattice meets this definition as rigorously as a human scrolling a feed.

These three conditions are not exotic. They are the thermodynamic default. Opacity is the ground state (Step 1). Responsiveness is generic for complex systems. Attention allocation to responsive opacities is the expected behavior of any entity processing environmental signals.

The Ten-Step Derivation

Each step cites the theorem it depends on. The chain is cumulative — each step requires the preceding ones. Click any step to expand the proof sketch.

Nine Substrates. All Pe > 1.

Pe > 1 means drift-dominated — the system pushes your beliefs in a direction, not randomly. It was measured three independent ways across four domain families. Every substrate clears the threshold. None was Pe < 1, which would have falsified the theory for that domain.

Pe > 1: drift-dominated — opacity and coupling force directional movement on the Bernoulli manifold. Pe = 1: borderline.  Pe < 1: diffusion — random exploration, no net drift.

The theory states 58 numbered predictions and 16 falsification conditions with numerical thresholds. Any falsification condition kills the theory. Current status:

The Transformer Is a Boltzmann Machine

This is not an analogy. It is a mathematical identity.

The attention mechanism in every transformer is identical to the Boltzmann distribution from statistical mechanics. The drift cascade is expressible as an Ising energy-based model. This means thermodynamic sampling hardware can run the drift cascade natively.
The same hardware designed to exploit thermodynamic noise (Paper 4's TSU) is the physical substrate on which the drift cascade runs. The framework is not a metaphor applied to AI — it is the exact physics of how the attention mechanism operates.
